No jargon. Pictures helped. Didn't match my screen. Incorrect instructions. Both are in the administrators group. Opening the shared folder, it prompts for a login and password. We used the login Janelle with the password for her account on MainPC. Everything then opens up and we can read the files but is unable to write files to the folder over the network.
Any thoughts? Actually I stop at step 3!!! So what should I do? I have the same problem as Krystal, the radio button for Network ID is grayed out. Does this mean my settings are out somewhere? I have a desktop computer running Windows 7 and a laptop running Windows Vista. I have a wireless router that my laptop is connected through and my desktop is connected through that same router via a wired connection.
I have a specific folder within my documents that I would like to be identical on both computers. I use it for work and always want the files within this folder to be identical on the two computers. The problem is that the other computer will usually show up when I am looking at the network. But when I click on it to access the files it says:.
Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. So, what does this mean for w7? How do I tell it that the name it is connecting with some IP address is incorrect? It comes back saying it worked, but I still cannot get to the unfriendly vista by name.
Hi MarkWoolsey ,. Thanks for the notice, but I checked for that already. It does not seem to be the problem. I'm pretty convinced the problem is with the naming service that connects the computer name to the IP address. Any idea how to get that working? Make sure that the Home Group password has not changed. You can check the Home Group password on another computer and then use that one to join the Home Group.
Then click on View or print the Home Group password. Also try changing the password. Check if that helps.
Disable antivirus software. Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Note : Make sure you Turn On the Windows Firewall and re- enable the antivirus after performing all the troubleshooting steps. You can do this by going to Control Panel , then Network and Sharing Center , and clicking on Change advanced sharing settings in the left pane. It should be on by default, but if someone changed your settings, this could also cause the problem. If the clocks are not synchronized, the Home Group feature will not work.
If your computer is connected to the Internet, it should automatically pick up the correct time. You may have to check the time server settings if that is not the case. If you used a program to disable services or manually disabled them , it may be causing the problem. The services that need to be turned on are listed below:.
This is pretty much not an issue anymore, but just for the sake of covering all bases, you need to make sure that your router can support IPv6 protocol.
If not, Windows 7 cannot communicate with the other computers using Home Group. Any relatively new router will support it, so unless you have a really old router, you should be ok.
